Ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has reportedly directed a ban on the organisation of marriages between January and March, in the city.
The order of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government — sent to hotels’, guest houses’ and marriage halls’ owners, and caterers in Prayagraj — reportedly states that no marriages will be held a day before or after the ‘Kumbh Snan’ (or Kumbh Bath) which will be held between January to March 2019.

Reportedly, the government’s decision has affected families who had organised marriages in the city in the three months. Per reports, guesthouse owners said that families were left confused about further recourse needing to be taken against this decision.
“When we told families about the new order, some were nervous; some wanted to take legal action. We would also urge the government to give a rebate to at least those guest houses that do not fall on the path for the Kumbh Mela and would not cause obstruction to the seers and saints visiting the Mela,” a guest house owner reportedly said.
