A mob lynched a man on suspicion that he has kidnapped children on Wednesday at Bulbulchandi-Dubapara village in Habibpur of Malda district, West Bengal.

He was tied to an electricity pole and beaten to death, said a Hindustan Times report. The man is still unidentified, the report added.

The police have arrested three people on the basis of a video. The victim appeared to be a homeless man, the police said.

According to the HT report, the mob confronted the victim and asked him why he had come there. As they didn’t like his response, they tied him to an electricity post and began to beat him.

Local CPI(M) MLA Khagen Murmu said, “I heard about the lynching, and it was ghastly to say the least.”

The incidents of mob lynching of innocent people based on rumours are on the rise in the country.

On June 8, two men were lynched in Karbi Anglong district in Assam for allegedly kidnapping children of the area.

In the month of May, at least eight people were lynched on suspicions of being child-lifters in Jharkhand.
