Varun Gandhi, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from the Sultanpur constituency, was caught on camera openly promising people ‘an envelope’ during a poll rally in Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
In a video clip of India TV doing rounds on social media, Gandhi is heard saying in a poll rally at Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, “Kisi humari behen ki shadi ho, main pahunchun ya na pahunchun, lifafa zaroor pahunchega.” (It does not matter whether or not I reach any of your sisters’ weddings, but my envelope will reach you.”

Gandhi’s statement, tantamount to luring voters with the promise of money ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, is seen as violation of the Model Code of Conduct as laid down by the Election Commission.
Sharing the clip, a journalist wrote “@varungandhi80 tells voters his “envelopes” would reach them whether he comes to them or not. Isn’t this open luring of voters with cash this election season??”
