Two days after Police Constable Suresh Vats was killed by a stone-pelting mob in Ghazipur, Union Minister Mahesh Sharma reportedly said on December 31, 2018 that the incident should not be linked to law and order in the state.

Speaking to ANI, Sharma who is the Member of Parliament from Gautam Buddha Nagar, said that while the constable’s death was unfortunate, it “should not be linked with law & order situation in the state. It was a reactionary incident.”
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Ghazipur, a mob attacked cops in Ghazipur, on Saturday, December 29, resulting in the death of head constable Vats. Several other cops were left injured. The officers were returning after completing protocol duties at PM Modi’s had held a rally.
Speaking to ANI, Vat’s son VP Singh had said that the police was unable to “protect their own”.
“Police is not being able to protect their own. What can we expect from them? What will we do with compensation now? Earlier, similar incidents took place in Bulandshahr and Pratapgarh,” he had told ANI.
