In the wake of the hearing on Article 35A, which provides special rights and privileges to natives of Jammu and Kashmir, and is likely to take place in the apex court on February 25, the Kashmir Valley has witnessed massive amounts of militarisation — more so than it already is.

As many as 100 additional companies of the paramilitary (nearly 10,000 personnel) have been sent to the Kashmir Valley in the wake of a possible law and order situation. This movement of troops has led to much panic among the citizens of the state. Governor Satya Pal Malik, however, assures there is no cause for concern.

Speaking to Kashmir Crown, Malik said the massive mobilisation of troops is owing to the upcoming elections. He mentioned that an Election Commission team is soon to visit the state. To demonstrate that the state has enough security personnel to man an election, the troops have been called. To the people of Kashmir, who are reportedly panicking — fearing war — Malik said, “This is the mood across the nation. There is nothing I can do about that. I do not wish to comment on that. But right now, there is nothing for people to panic about.”

He added, “The Centre or the state administration has no enmity with the people of Kashmir. We are for them. We’ll take care of them. Our enmity is with Pakistan and those forces who work for Pakistan.”
