A woman was tied to a tree, beaten and garlanded with shoes on Wednesday for allegedly having an extra-marital affair in Gomati district’s Purba Rangamati village, Tripura.
The police found the victim unconscious on the spot. Later, she was rushed to a hospital.
The police have taken into custody Ranjit Das, the man with whom the woman had an affair. However, none of the attackers have been arrested, Hindustan Times reported.
Gomati Additional Superintendent of Police Nabadeep Jamatia said, “We recorded her statement as she doesn’t know how to write. All the accused persons will be identified and arrested by today [Thursday].”
Das’ wife had caught him with the woman about two weeks ago, which led to a dispute between the married couple. Das’ wife was hospitalised following the domestic dispute and succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday. Das was arrested after his wife’s death.
The victim told the police that when she was working in a farm, a group of angered villagers came and brutally thrashed her, tied her to a tree and humiliated her with shoes and ink.
The police have booked Das under Sections 498(A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 304(B) (the death of a woman caused by any burns or bodily injury) of the IPC.
