Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI (M)] MP P Karunakaran was not allowed to move an amendment in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, January 8 to the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2019 that provides 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker from the General category, the party general secretary Sitaram Yechury said.
The CPI (M) wanted to add SC/ST/OBC/Minorities as the current bill provides 10 per cent reservation only for general category poor in private higher educational institutions. The party also wanted to amend the bill to provide reservation in private sector jobs as well.
Yechury tweeted:
We wanted to move an amendment. As the Bill moved today, talks of extending benefits to private educational institutions, why should SCs/STs/OBC/Minorities be not be able to avail of it?
Also, this must be extended to private jobs too, why just private educational institutions? pic.twitter.com/ytOLyaIWhM— Sitaram Yechury (@SitaramYechury) January 8, 2019
However, CPI (M) was not allowed to move the amendment said Sitaram Yechury. He slammed the Narendra Modi govt, saying the it is intentionally not allowing the discussion as it would “expose them (govt) thoroughly”.
Our MPs were told that it was “too late” for amendments! BJP has reduced Lok Sabha to this. A Constitutional amendment bill was moved only in the afternoon, then “too late” for amendments? BJP does not want these issues discussed at all as it will expose them thoroughly. https://t.co/XWaEqZp4VR
