In response to a question asked by Rajya Sabha MP Md Nadimul Haque on Friday, January 4 the Railways Ministry revealed that in all but two railway zones, the punctuality rate of trains has dropped significantly in the last three years. In effect, this means that a larger percentage of trains are running late today, than they were three years ago.
Except for the North Central zone, which showed an improvement of approximately 5 percentage points, and the East Central zones, all zones reported a slump in performance in 2018-19 as compared to 2015-16.
The South East Central zone reported the worst drop in performance — from a punctuality rate of around 83 per cent in 2015-16 to 56 per cent in 2018-19. The Northern zone’s performance dropped 19 percentage points, South Western zone’s rate dropped about 15 percentage points.
Here is the data provided by the Minister of State for Railways, Rajen Gohain to the Rajya Sabha.
