A mob attacked cops in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, December 29, resulting in the death of one constable. Several other cops were left injured. The officers were returning after completing protocol duties — Prime Minister Narendra Modi had held a rally in town earlier in the day.
While speaking to media persons, a police official struggling to hold back tears, said, “After completing our duties we went near a bridge. We received information from the control room that there was a traffic jam there. The control room asked us to stay there and clear the jam.”

He added, “Some individuals belonging to the Nishad community were protesting. We made several attempts to calm the angry protesters, but they were reluctant. Then they started throwing stones, bricks and sticks. Two-three police officials were injured, and one constable died before we could reach the district hospital.”
The slain police constable was on duty at Karimuddinpur Police Station. He was deployed for VVIP duties for PM Modi’s rally.
