“Congress now claims they carried out six surgical strikes. What strikes were these about which the terrorists did not get to know, Pak didn’t know; even Indians didn’t know… First, they mocked, then protested, and now they say ‘me too, me too.’

The “honourable” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said these words at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally in Sikar, Rajasthan on May 3, making a mockery of the #MeToo movement, and by his own party’s logic, of the armed forces as well.

On May 2, the Congress party had given details of several surgical strikes conducted on Pakistan during the UPA regime. At a press conference in Delhi, Congress leader Rajiv Shukla listed the dates and specific locations of the military operations that were not publicly disclosed earlier — in Bhatal Sector and Poonch on June 19, 2008; in Sharda sector across the Neelam River Valley in Kel between August 30 and September 1, 2011; at Sawan Patra check-post on January 6, 2013;  at Nazapir Sector between July 27 and July 28, 2013; at Neelam Valley on August 6, 2013; and one on January 14, 2014.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had said in an interview, “For us, military operations were meant for strategic deterrence… than to be used for vote-garnering exercises.”

Modi’s speech has made a mockery of a social movement that outed many sexual predators around the world and empowered many women to share there experiences. The movement also shed light on decades of abuse allegedly perpetrated by BJP MP and former minister MJ Akbar

The PM has remained conspicuously silent about Akbar being accused over 20 women journalists of sexual harassment. US-based editor Pallavi Gogoi has accused Akbar (now Chowkidar MJ Akbar) of sexual assault.

A new low for PM Modi or the BJP? Most definitely.
