Rajendra Singh, an RTI activist was shot dead in broad daylight in Bihar’s East Champaran district on June 19. The assailants remain unidentified till date.

Singh was reportedly under political pressure to compromise with those against whom he had filed corruption cases, based on the information revealed in RTIs.

Furthermore, Singh’s family members claimed that Deputy Superintendent of Police Areraj, who is a member of the SIT team investigating Singh’s murder, had arrested Singh on false charges on a previous occasion. Rajendra had raised issues of corruptions against Areraj.

Singh had been attacked four times before too. He had written to Superintendent of Police in October 2017 claiming a threat to his life and sought police protection.

However, the police didn’t initiate a probe in the matter and no arrests were made. Singh was also not provided any police security.

National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) and the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI) have now written to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, seeking a CID probe in Singh’s murder. They have also asked an immediate investigation against those who have been named in the FIR lodged by Singh’s wife.

People named in the FIR include Subhash Yadav alias Omprakash Yadav (ex-Mukhiya Bariyariya Tola, Rajapur), Satyendra Singh, Sudhanshu Singh, Ajay Kumar Singh, Pramod Kumar Singh and six others.
