On Saturday, FPAP, an RSS-front organized a special event where Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke at length to defend Modi government against the comprehensive piece written by N Ram in The Hindu on Friday about the Rafale deal.
Interestingly, a plastic folder issued to the attendees at the event at India International Centre in Delhi contained a two-page document, titled “Official Reply by Defence Ministry to N. Ram’s article published by The Hindu on 18.01.2019”.
Two things glaringly stood out. While there has been no official reply from the Defence Ministry, Colonel Aman Anand who is officiating as the Spokesperson of the ministry had released a two-page document to certain journalists, asking them attribute it to him and not the ministry. A ministry statement would be put on PIB website and be a part of the official record.

But even more surprisingly, the statement released by the RSS-front actually has far more details than given in the statement of the spokesperson. And these are not some minor details but data, facts and figures on Rafale deal which Modi government has refused to share even with Parliament under the twin excuse of national security and secrecy.

This raises a far more serious question. Modi government doesn’t consider it fit to share certain facts with the Parliament but is proud to give that secret information to RSS which puts it out in the public domain in the presence of the defence minister herself. This is blatantly unconstitutional and illegal, and inimical to India’s security interests if such privileged information is available to an unauthorised organization, which was banned for Mahatma Gandhi’s murder 71 years ago.
Modi government has toyed with, and continues to toy with India’s democratic institutions. Its disdain for any rule of law has now reached such heights that it is willing to let RSS access secret documents of the defence ministry, jeopardizing national security and damaging India’s strategic interests. To use a phrase BJP and RSS are fond of using, this amounts to treason, nothing less.
