On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his government’s decision to ban notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. He had reasoned that this move would bring back all black money. In two years since then, it has become more than clear how disastrous the move was for the Indian economy, particularly the unorganised sector.
While demonetisation did not achieve any its so–called objectives, it caused a lot of hardship to a large number of people — unemployment, loss of savings and in some cases, even death. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and its ministers have not yet accepted that the move was a failure, almost everyone else has. Many people shared articles about the common people’s suffering and others marked the day by mocking the Modi government.
Here is what Twitteratis had to say about the ‘masterstroke’.
The magnitude of failure of demonetisation can be gauged from the fact that Modi ji chose to celebrate Advani’s birthday today.

In memory of the hundreds of deaths caused by #Demonetisation, the hundreds of thousands of businesses/companies that were destroyed, the millions of jobs lost, & the 1.25 billion victims of one of the biggest con-jobs in human history. A scam that our own govt. inflicted on us.

#Demonetisation was a surgical strike by a megalomaniac against his own people . It will neither be forgotten or forgiven. 100 plus people lost lives, many many small & medium business shut down. Every single Indian except the ultra rich suffered to get their own hard earned money

Demonetisation is a failure not because of economic reasons, it is a failure because this government under @narendramodi conducted a social experiment that coerced the citizens to choose apathy over empathy #DestructionByDemonetisation pic.twitter.com/IEOLcO8a3v
