Former IPS officer Meeran Chadha Borwankar has strongly condemned and asked for an apology from BJP Bhopal candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur’s insensitive comments on the death of Anti-Terror Squad chief Hemant Karkare during the 26/11 attacks.
Borwankar told CNN TV18, “I am extremely distressed at what Pragya Thakur has said about martyr Hemant Karkare. I knew him for more than twenty years. He was a gentleman to the core and one of the most professionally sound police officer.”
She added, “Just because he is no more to defend himself what right Pragya Thakur has to smear his name? It is most unethical and against the Indian culture that the lady professes to believe in. I condemn her statement and seek her public apology for the same.”
Meeran Chadha Borwankar was the director general of national crime records bureau. She has served as the Pune police commissioner and as the chief of Mumbai crime branch.
Earlier on Friday, Malegaon bomb blast accused Thakur said that her ‘curse’ brought about the death of Anti-Terror Squad chief Hemant Karkare at the hands of terrorists during the 26/11 attack, and had referred to him as ‘anti-national’.
The Central IPS association had also condemned her remark, saying, “Ashok Chakra awardee late Sri Hemant Karkare, IPS made the supreme sacrifice fighting terrorists. Those of us in uniform condemn the insulting statement made by a candidate and demand that sacrifices of all our martyrs be respected.”
