Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to the nation to take the pledge of “Main Bhi Chowkidar” — I am also a Watchman — has gone off the rails, with people calling out the hypocrisy of those pledging on Twitter and other social media sites.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP and rape accused MJ Akbar and former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde posted tweets with the hashtag #MainBhiChowkidar.
I am proud to join #MainBhiChowkidar movement. As a citizen who loves India, I shall do my best to defeat corruption, dirt, poverty & terrorism and help create a New India which is strong, secure & prosperous.

As Chowkidars of our nation, we are committed to creating a clean economy by using cashless financial transactions.
The menace of corruption and black money has adversely affected us for decades. Time to eliminate these for a better future. #MainBhiChowkidar #ChowkidarPhirSe pic.twitter.com/y44vwyM4xs

Amit Shah
The BJP president is a Hall-of-Famer when it comes to shady dealings. Amit Shah has been accused of being one of the main co-conspirators in the alleged 2005 fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Shaikh.
In 2009, Amit Shah allegedly directed the police to put a young woman and a senior IAS officer under illegal surveillance in 2009 when he was Gujarat’s minister of state for home.
In 2017, The Wire reported that his son Jay Shah’s company experienced an astronomical increase in his companies revenues due to Amit Shah’s proximity to PM Modi. Jay Shah’s Temple Enterprise Pvt Ltd had grown from Rs 50,000 in 2014-15 to Rs 80.5 crore in 2015-16, the report said.
Piyush Goyal
As per a report published in The Wire by Rohini Singh, Goyal sold a company, jointly owned by him and his wife, at nearly “1,000 times the face value” to the privately-owned Piramal Group, shortly after he became part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet in 2014. The Wire had also reported on the minister’s link to Shirdi Industries, alleging financial impropriety.
MJ Akbar
Journalist and former Minister of State for External Affairs, MJ Akbar has been accused of sexual harassment committed over several years, by over 20 women. Pallavi Gogoi, the editor of National Public Radio (NPR), had alleged that Akbar had raped her when she was working as his junior at The Asian Age.

BS Yeddyurappa
Former Karnataka chief minister Yeddyurappa has allegedly tried to bribe MLAs of the Congress party in an attempt to form the BJP government in the state. In a press conference on February 8, Karnataka Chie Minister HD Kumaraswamy along with Sharangouda, son of Gurmitkal MLA Naganagouda Kandkur, had released the contentious audio tape where Yeddyurappa is allegedly heard offering bribes and threatening Sharanagouda, to make his father take part in ‘Operation Kamala’.
Pankaja Munde
As per a Dainik Bhaskar report, Munde has been accused of engineering a Rs 106-crore scam involving the purchase of smartphones. The accusation has been levelled by her estranged cousin and Nationalist Congress party leader Dhananjay Munde.
Munde-led Women and Child Development department in Maharashtra was also severely criticised by the Supreme Court recently for issuing tenders under the “Take Home Ration” scheme with “arbitrarily fixed” terms and conditions that made it impossible for small-scale women’s self-help groups to participate. A Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Deepak Gupta shot down a contract worth Rs 6,300 crores issued by the ministry.
The state government had reportedly awarded the tenders to three private, large-scale contractors who had already been indicted for providing poor quality food rations by a 2012 Supreme Court-appointed committee.

Several individuals slammed the BJP leaders for posting the tweets claiming that they are chowkidars (Watchmen).
Talk about chutzpah. @PiyushGoyal is
– Treasurer of India's wealthiest party and conduit for payments to it
– sold his company Flashnet to a billionaire who invested in sectors that he oversees for 1000 times its face value
