Madhya Pradesh: Unable To Pay Debt, Farmer Ends Life

Even as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan says farmers here are not unhappy with the state government, the fourth incident of suicide has been reported in the past 10 days.

According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, a farmer in Balaghat district committed suicide by consuming poison after not being able to repay a loan of Rs 1.55 lakh. He died on June 2 in a hospital.

The deceased, Dhannalal, took a loan from Punjab National Bank through the Kisan Credit Card but could not repay the loan due to poor crop produce.

Cops have ordered a probe into the farmer’s death. The real cause of death will be known after the post-mortem.

Security has been stepped up at the deceased farmer’s house in view of the ongoing protests by farmers across the country, including Madhya Pradesh.

Recently, when Chauhan was asked about the farmers’ unrest in Mandsaur and agrarian crisis in the state, he denied that there was any such crisis.
