Hoshangabad/Makhanagar: After the death of the nephew of a sarpanch here, violent protests erupted in various parts of Bhopal.

Krishnakumar, a 28-year-old farmer was crushed under a dumper ferrying sand from Narmada river basin on Wednesday.

Twenty-four sand dumpers were set on fire by the protesters on Wednesday night. The police have registered a case against 50 people, a Dainik Bhaskar report said.

Tension escalated further after the police picked up Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Siyalal Yadav and Shailendra Yadav for questioning.

The family members of Krishnakumar kept his body on a trolley on an intersection at Babai and blocked the Pipariya State Highway for about an hour.

After SP Arvind Saxena gave assurance of proper investigation in the case, Krishnakumar was cremated later in the afternoon.

Congress state general secretary Savita Diwan and former MLA Girijashankar Sharma also took part in the blockade at Babai.

At least 69 people lost their lives due to speeding sand dumpers in the past five months, said the report.
