The official Twitter account of Madhya Pradesh Congress, on December 20, announced the fulfillment of yet another promise made by the Congress party in the run up to the recently-held assembly polls. The policemen in the state, the party said, will get a day’s holiday every week.

According to a report in Amar Ujala, cops in M.P. did not, till now, have a system of weekly offs. The issue of holidays has been a crucial one with wives and other family members of cops having led demonstrations on the same.

In his election manifesto, Kamal Nath, now chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, had promised the police: one-day recess in week, recruitment of 50,000 cops in order to counter the severe human resource crunch, a housing allowance of Rs 5,000 for cops and a better work environment for the police force.

While announcing the fulfilment of this election promise, the M.P. Congress also took potshots at the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government that had been led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the state. The party said: “The people of MP have realised after 15 years after what a functioning government looks like. Otherwise, they had accepted only advertisements as their government,” adding “Congratulations to the end of advertisement government, people of MP.”
