In an unprecedented move, the Election Commission on Tuesday, May 15 barred all campaign activities in West Bengal till the final phase of polling on May 19. The action came after violence erupted in Kolkata on Monday during Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah’s rally.
Trinamool supporters clashed with BJP supporters, during which of which a statue of Bengali reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was smashed, allegedly by BJP workers. The ban will come into force on May 16, 10 PM.
