Subhash Chandra, a debt-ridden potato farmer from Siyarmau village in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, had  committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on December 9. His son, Amit Kumar has alleged that demonetisation resulted in major financial losses due to which Chandra had to incur the debt.

Gaon Connection reported that according to Kumar, Chandra had lost around Rs 22 lakhs because of demonetisation—  a loss which he (Chandra) was never able to recover from.

Kumar also said that his deceased father had stored around 1500 sacks of potatoes in Lily Cold Storage in Hazratpur, and in Jashoda Cold Storage. However, as market prices of potato produce dropped, the cold storage owners threw the stored produced out, causing even more financial injury to Chandra. Following this, when money lenders pressed Chandra for repayment, Chandra took the fatal step, says Kumar .

Reportedly, police is conducting its investigations in the matter.
