Triple Talaq Ordinance Motivated By Considerations Other Than The Welfare Of Muslim Women: CPI(M)

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) opposed the triple talaq ordinance passed by the central government on Wednesday, saying that the ordinance serves the “political interests of the the ruling party.” 

In a press statement, CPI(M) said that the ordinance is “motivated by considerations other than that of the welfare of Muslim women” and that it required a full discussion in the Rajya Sabha. 

“The ordinance is an undemocratic step bypassing parliament. 

The ordinance is designed to serve the political interests of the ruling party and cannot be accepted.” the statement read.

On Wednesday night, President Ram Nath Kovind signed an ordinance banning the practice of instant triple talaq, a top law ministry functionary said. The Union Cabinet had approved the ordinance to ban instant triple talaq and make it a criminal offence.
