4,500 houses built under a slum rehabilitation scheme in Chandigarh have reportedly been lying unoccupied as the administration is waiting for the inauguration to be conducted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dainik Bhaskar reported that the local administration decided that the prime minister should inaugurate the project in Maloya village in Chandigarh however, there has been no word from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) regarding the same.

The construction of the houses was completed over two years ago, reported Dainik Bhaskar, but the keys were not handed over to the beneficiaries as the sewage treatment plant had not been built.

The report added that due to being unoccupied, the houses have been vandalised and have become a den of drunkards and drug-addicts.

The inauguration was reportedly planned twice in the last two months, first, in December 2018 and then in January 2019.

If the inauguration is not done before the Election Commission enforces the model code of conduct, the beneficiaries will have to wait till after the Lok Sabha elections to move into their homes.
