Even as the Bulandshahr violence case recorded some breakthrough — the police arrested a youth named Prashant Nat three weeks after the assassination of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from Uttar Pradesh are still attempting to put a spin on the incident. The latest comes from BJP’s Devendra Singh Lodhi, who said that the slain cop had shot himself and others are being falsely framed for his murder.
According to a Janasatta report, the BJP MLA from Bulandshahr said that Inspector

died after accidentally shooting himself and that no one, other than cops, had guns during the December 3 violence.
“He became hopeless and shot himself in haste while trying to save himself. He was not targeted; it was the mob that got aggressive as the police was not filing an FIR,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
The BJP MLA further claimed that when a crowd surrounded the inspector, he allegedly tried to shoot himself in the shoulder to “save himself”, but he accidentally shot himself in the head. Lodhi added that the late cop was an encounter specialist who had shot himself in the arm several times in the past.
After the cow slaughter rumours had spread in Bulandshahr on December 3, violence erupted in the city as Hindu protestors took to the street and committed acts of vandalism. When cops clashed with the demonstrators, stone-pelting ensued. In these very clashes, Subodh Kumar and 20-year-old Sumit died.
