After the Bharatiya Janata Paty (BJP) tasted defeat in Kairana by polls on Thursday, Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh Chandan Mishra has called the opposition unity in Uttar Pradesh a “serious setback” for his party.
The BJP MP said if opposition unites, the saffron party has a really serious fight in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, an NDTV report said.
He added that the BJP didn’t pay adequate attention to sugarcane farmers and Kairana is a constituency where sugarcane is the main cash crop for farmers. Pointing out that the Opposition had raked up the issue of non-payment of dues many times during their campaign, Mitra said that farmers were “disenchanted” with the BJP.
The MP also called the 1 paisa cut in fuel price by the Narendra Modi government “a cruel joke.”
In Kairana by polls, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan was backed by the Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and the Congress.
