More than 30 girls in the age group of 7 to 17, who were living in the shelter run by Brajesh Thakur in Muzzafarpur, Bihar, have been allegedly raped over a period of months. The victims have named Thakur as one of the rapists.
In their statements, the victims have described that the NGO staff tortured them if they resisted the abuse. One girl was allegedly killed and buried.
Today, according to reports, another case was registered against Thakur, when it was found that 11 women had gone missing from a different shelter that is also run by him.
This has surfaced at the same time as the picture in which Thakur can be seen smiling gleefully while in police custody.
The picture was shared by a journalist on his Twitter handle.
With each day, more horrific details of the case are emerging. After a prolonged silence, the Nitish government has finally handed over the matter to the CBI.
The smiling face of Thakur is eerily representative of the impunity with which systematic abuse was allegedly carried out at the shelter.
