Royana Singh, the chief proctor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) allegedly slapped a nursing student of the university, leading to perforation in her eardrum on November 28. According to a Telegraph report, the nursing students were protesting following the Indian Nursing Council’s (INC) deregistration of Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) that is affiliated to the BHU. Reportedly, although INC’s deregistration order was issued in 2017, for the last three years, the students were informed about the order only recently.

Bhadaini Mirror reported that while the students were protesting, Singh, accompanied by a few male security guards, interrupted the protest. Singh and the guards also ill-treated and hit the protesting students. Singh allegedly slapped a student named Manju Kumari, causing her left eardrum to perforate.

According to the Mirror report, angered students approached the Lanka police station to register a case against Singh on December 1. However, reportedly, the police is yet to file a First Information Report (FIR) on Kumari’s complaint. At the same time, Singh has filed a counter complaint against the students alleging that they had resorted to violence and that she and the guards tried to stop the protests.

Speaking to reporters, Kumari said, “…without asking anything, she (Singh) started hitting us. Many were hit. I was also hit. She slapped me hard. That time, my ear, entirely…I was not able to hear anything. I thought that time…I wanted to be with everyone, so I was not able to get a medical (check) done. But I thought it would get better in one or two days. But it did not get better so today (December 1) I came to get it checked to sir (doctor).”

Kumari added, “There, they have written, ‘After check-up it has found that your eardrum has perforated. And you will need to be on medications for three months continuously. If your eardrum does not heal, you will have to get an operation done.’”

Kumari said that any improvements were to be seen thereafter, she will have to take medications for the next 10 years.
