Assam: 16-Year-Old YouTuber Detained Twice For Criticising Modi

A 16-year-old boy from Golaghat in Assam was apprehended twice last week by different district police for criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in a YouTube Video.

He was apprehended after several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members filed complaints in different police stations across the state. The video since then has been pulled down, Scroll reported.

He was first apprehended by the Golaghat district police. Then he was apprehended by Majuli police. Since he is a juvenile, he has not been arrested and has been registered into a juvenile observation home.

He was apprehended under sections 500 and 505 for defamation and public mischief and section 67 of the Information Technology Act for “publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form”.

After being released, he apologised for his act, the Scroll report said.

Congress spokesperson Debabrata Saikia said the language used in the video may be considered offensive by some, but there was nothing wrong with the content of the video.

According to the new amendment, the government will facilitate citizenship for illegal migrants from particular minority communities from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This has caused a huge uproar in Assam. Several protests have also been held recently against the move.
