Pune Court Sends Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira to 14 Days Judicial Custody

A Pune Sessions Court sent rights activists Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira to 14 days’ judicial custody on Tuesday, November 6. The three activists, along with Varavara Rao and Gautam Navlakha were arrested by the Maharashtra police in nationwide raids on August 28. 

ANI also reported that Ferreira had alleged in the court that he was beaten while being interrogated in police custody. Ferreira reportedly said he had been slapped by police officials around eight-ten times on Sunday, November 4. He also said that on Monday, November 5, he was taken to the hospital.

On October 27, the Pune Sessions Court, while rejecting the trio’s bail pleas, had ordered Bharadwaj to be sent to police custody until November 6. Gonsalves and Ferreira were also sent to police custody until November 6.

Navlakha was ordered to be released from house arrest by the Bombay High Court on October 1.  The court extended the date of the restraining order against Navlakha’s arrest to November 21.

On October 25, the Hyderabad High Court had extended the house arrest of Rao by three more weeks.
