In Assam’s Goalpara district, a group of people on Sunday pulled a young couple from a motorbike and thrashed them at a public place. The police have initiated a suo-moto case against the group on Tuesday terming it as a case of “moral policing”.
DGP Kuladhar Saikia said, “We didn’t receive a complaint, but we took suo-moto cognisance of the case and have arrested main accused, the probe to nab others is underway.”

The video of the couple being canned by a group of people went viral on social media on Thursday, said a Times of India report.
“Soon after, a member of the Kherupara defence committee, Qurban Ali, was arrested. We’re looking for three others involved in the case. We can’t make their names public until we catch them,” a senior police officer told TOI.
The brother of the man who was attacked has claimed that villagers later held a meeting and forced the two to get married, according to an NDTV report.
