The Supreme Court Collegium on Friday agreed to reiterate justice K M Joseph’s name for elevation to the apex court. However, the decision may not be conveyed to the government before May 16.
The law ministry held back Justice Joseph’s name while clearing the elevation of Justice Indu Malhotra.
The Collegium is also mulling other names for elevation to the SC on the lines suggested by the government — give representation to unrepresented states such as Rajasthan and Uttarakhand and Andhra and Telangana and weaker sections.
Once finalised, they may be sent together to the law ministry. However, in that case, Justice Joseph’s tenure at the top court will be shorter.
