Is Afghanistan in Southeast Asia? Asking For Sudhir Chaudhary

Sudhir Chaudhary

Zee News editor Sudhir Chaudhary needs a lesson in geography. Chaudhary, who recently met former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, tweeted a photo of the meet, calling Karzai, “one of the tallest leaders of South East Asia.”

Karzai is an internationally recognised leader. Having served as the Afghanistan president from 2001 to 2014, his political stature is one that leaves no doubt. He is also physically tall. What he is not, however, is from Southeast Asia.

The subregion called Southeast Asia or Southeastern Asia comprises of 11 countries, namely: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor (Timor-Leste), Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. South Asia, on the other hand, comprises Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

An easy way to remember that is to visualise a map of Asia and realise Afghanistan is nowhere on the east of the continent. Then again, such attention to detail cannot be expected from the Zee News editor. Chaudhary was, after all, one of the only TV anchors to report on the then-unverified and patently false news about NGC — “Nano GPS Chips” supposedly present in the post-demonetisation Rs 2,000 notes that would track its illegal usage.

Twitter users were quick to point out this error to Chaudhary, though not in the most direct of ways.
