Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT cell head Amit Malviya has again come under the scanner for posting a misleading tweet. He said that the revised GST rate has proved to be a boon for the middle class without even realising that the rates will be effective from January 1, 2019.
In his tweet, Malviya attempted to mislead people by saying that “tax on restaurant bill reduced to 5% instead of steep 30% earlier. Movie ticket taxed at 12 per cent (up to Rs 100 or 18 per cent for over 100), down from 28 per cent earlier. A film and meal with the family has never been this affordable!” The decision to cut the tax rate of 33 items, including some consumer goods such as televisions, tyres, monitors and movie tickets was taken on December 22. However, it seems Malviya choose to ignore the fact that the new rates will be effective starting January 1, 2019.
For movie tickets priced below Rs 100, the tax has been reduced from 18 per cent to 12 per cent and for tickets priced above Rs 100, the tax has been reduced from 28 per cent to 18 per cent. The GST Council had earlier slashed rates for both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned restaurants to 5 per cent without an input tax credit, which was effective from November 15, 2017.
