Uttar Pradesh police claimed on Sunday, December 2, that a youth had allegedly set a woman on fire in Sitapur. Reportedly, the woman had resisted the youth’s attempted sexual harassment towards her. Following the incident, the woman has been admitted to the district hospital for sustaining burns.

The Hindu reported that the woman, a resident of Tambour in Sitapur, who was around 19–20 years of age, was set on fire when she had gone to relieve herself in the nearby field at night on December 1. Madhuvan Singh, Sitapur’s Additional Superintendent of Police, said, “When she went to the sugarcane field to relieve herself, the youth along with his brother poured kerosene oil on her, and set her on fire.”

According to Singh, the woman had filed a written complaint against the youth alleging misbehaviour. However, Om Prakash Saroj, the local station officer, failed to take any action against the youth.

Prabhakar Chaudhary, the Superintendent of Police said that one of the two people involved in the incident have been arrested, while the Additional SP is investigating the matter.
