The Delhi High Court on Tuesday, November 27, ordered a stay on the retrenchment of 297 employees of the Press Trust of India (PTI). Justice C Hari Shankar passed the order after the Federation of PTI Employees Union filed a petition on October 9, stating that, “the arbitrary policy of the management didn’t follow the rules of retrenchment”.
On September 29, PTI had sacked 297 employees in a single day. The move had resulted in panic and outrage.
The Brihanmumbai Union of Journalists has hailed the Delhi HC order, and said: “This is a historic victory for the Federation of PTI Employees’ Unions, but is also a beacon of hope for all those struggling for the implementation of the Majithia Wage Board Award.”
The order has also been hailed by the Federation of Press Trust of India employees union, which said, “This is the victory of media trade unionism in India and god is with us.”
