A Palanpur court on Thursday rejected the CID’s (Central Investigation Department) plea for Sanjiv Bhatt’s remand for a 22 year old ‘drug plantation’ case.
CID had arrested Bhatt on Wednesday from Banaskantha, Gujarat.
CID had sought a a 14-day remand. Additional Judicial Magistrate V R Charan rejected the plea, after Bhatt’s lawyer pointed out that it was a 22 year old case and that a petition is already pending in the supreme court regarding the same.
The CID’s demand was rejected by the magistrate after hearing the arguments, Bhatt was sent to a judicial custody at Palanpur sub-jail.
In 1996, Sumersingh Rajpurohit, a lawyer was arrested for possessing around one kg of opium and was arrested by the Banaskantha police. Bhatt was then the SP of Banaskantha district.
Rajpurohit then filed a petition, claiming that that the suggestions made by the police were false and that he was ‘framed’ to make his family vacate a disputed property in his hometown Pali, Rajasthan.
