After Congress party members registered a complaint against recently launched Netflix series ‘Sacred Games’ for tarnishing Rajiv Gandhi’s reputation, party president Rahul Gandhi took a stand on Saturday and said that “My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that”.
Gandhi also asserted that he believed freedom of speech is a fundamental democratic right.
Gandhi’s move was hailed by many politicians, media and film personalities on Twitter.
It is impressive that a mainstream politician like @RahulGandhi is taking this clear & progressive stand on freedom of expression & censorship. Also it’s gracious & mature that he is able to set aside the personal for the larger goal of democratic rights. #CreditWhereDue 👏🏾👏🏾 https://t.co/cfEU0S2KaS

This is very welcome @RahulGandhi : so hope it shall become a template for the party going forward. Because frankly no party in India has thus far stood for free speech. Rushdie and MF Husain became mirror images … https://t.co/vqRcH7y1rP

I have criticised Rahul Gandhi and Congress n number of times. I reserve my right to do so. But if he is doing something right, we should support him. His statement on FoE is absolutely right.

. @RahulGandhi is a class act. Period.
This one virtue trumps any argument/accusation that the BJP throws at him. https://t.co/SVU3div1VS— Zainab Sikander (@zainabsikander) July 14, 2018
Politics of @BJP4India has reached abysmally low levels. The best way to counter it is grace. Thank you @RahulGandhi ji for belittling every dirty act with dignity. https://t.co/QeoANyboGP

Kudos to @RahulGandhi for standing up for freedom of expression.
Imagine if any serial or web series is made about Sahebji now! Blasphemy! https://t.co/FKlnSn9Djk— Priyank Kharge / ಪ್ರಿಯಾಂಕ್ ಖರ್ಗೆ (@PriyankKharge) July 14, 2018
So glad to see this. Hope it contributes to creating a political culture which doesn't just refrain from knee-jerk litigation and censorship, but also stands firmly with freedom of expression, even when–especially when–at the receiving end. https://t.co/KBgIQkzQ7T
